Back in May, I bought an'87 savage with 9800 mile for $950. The bike was in excellent condition, except for the loud ticking. I was told that it was just the valves. So, I bought it.
It turns out that the cam shaft and rockers were ground down to nothing. (see earlier posts) I get the feeling that all Savages tick a little bit. I couldn't recognize it back then, but the bike i bought had one loud clank every time the cylinder kicked over. If you test drive it and the tick is more of a clank, that gets unbearably loud at 50mph, it may be more than the valves.
What little time I have spent riding this bike has been lots of fun. I hope this information helps.
